African Continuum Theater Company
Fresh Flavas New Works Program
Call for Plays!!!

Deadline for submission: April 3rd, 2009

The Fresh Flavas New Works Program began in 2003 as a series of staged readings of works-in-progress by playwrights of color. These readings, using local professional actors and presented to the public, provided essential feedback in the continued evolution of the works-in-progress. Many playwrights go through the long, arduous process of play development without ever seeing the work on stage.

In November of 2005, the African Continuum proved its commitment to cultivating new work with the world premiere presentation of two plays work-shopped in the Fresh Flavas reading series. Kingdom by David Emerson Toney and Draft Day by Marvin McAllister were presented in repertory at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington D.C. Since then we have developed the following plays: Cream Soda and Creme De Menthe by Caleen Sinnette Jennings, Billy Be Home Soon by Steve Langley, 24,7,365, by Jennifer L. Nelson, A Soft Escape by Sherry Shepard-Massat, Holly Down in Heaven, by Kara Corthron, and Nagasaki 6-7852 by David Emerson Tony

During the 2008-2009 season, Executive Director JoAnn Williams, dramaturge Jacqueline E. Lawton, and an ACTCo artistic team will select playwrights who will participate in workshops and readings to develop new work. As part of the development process, playwrights will work with professional actors, director, and new play development dramaturge. One play will receive a reading at the J.F. Kennedy Center’s Page-to-Stage new play festival, which is held annually over Labor Day weekend. Completed first drafts will be given full public readings hosted by African Continuum Theatre Company in the fall of 2009. The readings will be marketed to the general public and theater professionals in the DC Theater community.

The mission of the African Continuum Theatre Company is to produce and present theater in the nation’s capital from an African American perspective and experience.

For tickets, call the Atlas Performing Arts Center Box Office at 202-399-7993. For more information, call 202-529-5763 or visit the website at www.africancontinuumtheatre.com.

Submission Guidelines:
• Each full-length play must have no more than 3 characters.
• Playwrights must reside in the Mid-Atlantic Region (DC, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Delaware).
• The scripts must include character descriptions and notations as to whether characters may be doubled up or must be of a certain age and ethnicity.
• All plays must have page numbers.
• The title page must include the playwright's full name and contact info (including mailing address, phone number and e-mail address).
• Please include a play synopsis of 150 words or less.
• Scripts may have had staged readings or workshops, but no professional (Equity) productions or be published or represented by an agency or organization for purposes of royalty collection or production.
• Adaptations from material in the public domain are eligible for consideration.
• We encourage you to submit using double-sided printing and staples or paper clips to reduce the use of paper, binders and your costs.
• If you would like your script returned, please include SASE.

Deadline for submission: April 3rd, 2009

How to Submit:
